GPS is not a utility. It is a whisper that a jammer can shout over.
GPS jamming and spoofing
In short: the GPS signal that guides your phone and a cruise missile alike arrives at the receiver fainter than a light bulb viewed from 20,000 kilometers away. That weakness is the whole story. A cheap transmitter can bury it, and a slightly cleverer one can feed the receiver a convincing lie.
Most people treat satellite navigation as a fixed feature of the planet, like gravity or daylight. It is nothing of the sort. The signal from a GPS satellite reaches the ground at roughly minus 160 decibel-watts, which works out to less power than you would collect from a household bulb seen across two-thirds of the way to the Moon. Any receiver that faint is easy to overwhelm. Point a modest radio transmitter at the right frequency and the noise floor rises until the receiver simply gives up. That is jamming, and a unit small enough to fit in a backpack can deny navigation across several kilometers.

Jamming versus spoofing: two different attacks
Jamming is brute force. You flood the L1 band at 1575.42 MHz with noise and the receiver loses lock. Spoofing is the con artist’s version. Instead of drowning the signal, the attacker transmits fake satellite messages that look real, then slowly drags the receiver’s computed position away from the truth. A jammed drone knows it is lost. A spoofed drone is confident and wrong, which is far more dangerous. In December 2011 Iran claimed it captured an American RQ-170 stealth drone by spoofing its navigation, and while the technical details stayed disputed, the incident put spoofing on every planner’s whiteboard.
How weapons keep flying when the signal dies
Serious systems never trust GPS alone. A modern precision missile carries an inertial measurement unit, a package of ring-laser or fiber-optic gyroscopes and accelerometers that track motion without any outside signal. GPS corrects the slow drift of that inertial unit when it can, and the inertial unit carries the weapon through the seconds or minutes when GPS is denied. Some munitions add terrain matching or a scene-recognition seeker for the final approach. The Israeli Spike SR family leans on an electro-optical seeker and operator guidance, so a jammed GPS band barely dents it. The lesson from Ukraine has been blunt: purely GPS-dependent guidance kits see their hit rate collapse inside contested airspace, and both sides now assume the band is dirty.
The defenses receivers actually use
Hardening a receiver is a stack of separate tricks rather than one fix. The most effective ones share a single idea, which is to reject any signal that arrives from the wrong direction or looks physically impossible.
- Controlled-reception-pattern antennas, or CRPAs, steer a null toward the jammer and cut its power by tens of decibels.
- Tight coupling with an inertial unit lets the receiver flag a “satellite” whose implied motion contradicts the platform’s real acceleration.
- The military M-code signal is encrypted and harder to counterfeit than the open civilian code.
- Multi-constellation receivers pull from GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou at once, so knocking out one system is not enough.
- Signal-authentication checks, such as Galileo’s OSNMA, cryptographically sign the navigation message so a receiver can spot a forgery.
Why the problem is getting worse, not better
Jamming used to be a specialist capability. Now the hardware is commodity electronics, and regional jamming has become routine background noise across the eastern Mediterranean, the Baltic and the Persian Gulf, where airline crews report losing GPS in cruise. Reliable navigation increasingly depends on layered military communication and datalinks that can share position when the satellites go dark. The techniques above sit inside a wider contest of jam and counter-jam that engineers group under the heading of electronic warfare.
The practical takeaway is unromantic. Treat GPS as a helpful hint that vanishes the moment someone with a transmitter decides it should, and build every system that matters to keep working without it. The forces already doing that will still know where they are when the signal lies. The ones still trusting the satellites will find out the hard way.
